<abstract>A record peak flow in February of 1996 caused the Willamette River and its major tributaries to flood. This map was created to delineate the inundated areas near the mainstem and major tributaries of the Willamette River. Complete FGDC metadata is available from US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District. Updated through the Goal 5 process.</abstract>
<purpose>This polygon coverage will be used by land managers and government entities within the Willamette Basin to assess the limits of flooding during the 1996 flood. It will also be used as part of a research project designed to formulate future scenarios for growth in the Willamette Valley (Pacific NW Ecosystem Research Consortium: OSU, UofO, EPA).</purpose>
<supplinf>The original file, upon which this coverage is based, was produced at Spencer B. Gross Mapping in Portland, Oregon (http://www.sbgmaps.com) under contract to US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District (contact person: Robert C. Incomplete information has been provided to date to describe the process undertaken by SBG Maps to produce this inundation line. The contact person at SBG Maps is Chris Aldrich (chris@sbgmaps.com) and their mailing address is: 13545 NW Science Park Dr., Portland, OR 97229 Telephone 503-646-1733 The procedure to digitize the inundation line and to produce dxf files is pieced together here from information provided to USACE from SPG Maps. SPG Maps produced two projects for USACE: digital orthophotos for the Willamette River from 1995 (pre-flood) and this inundation line for the flood of 1996. Apparently, the georeference for the flood photography was bridged from the 1995 digital orthophotography, allowing the flood inundation line to be digitized directly from the rectified aerial photos of the flood. Color aerial photography was shot during the 1996 flood by Bergman Photographic, Portland, Oregon (503-239-6010) and by WAC in Eugene, Oregon (1- 800-845-8088). For this project, Bergman s photography was used almost entirely.</supplinf>
